North Shore Kauai Acupuncture, Cupping and more..

You're lying face down and the practitioner applies a home made herbal anti-inflammatory salve on your back incorporates a little "Chinese Tuina Massage" after she tells you the process of cupping. You can feel the strong suction of the glass to your skin as she removes the flame quickly creating immediate contact. She pulls the cups up and down your back pulling the skin away from the bones with just the right amount of suction. Several cups are placed around an old injury and slowly they start to stack up and before long, your whole back was covered. It feels like all of this old icky stuff is coming out of the muscles and getting sucked out by the cups, like a octopus massage or some mystical creature that sucks out all of the bad stuff.

Cupping has been around for thousands of years, dating back to 3000 B.C. in Asia and 1560 B.C. in Egypt. Traditionally before glass cups became available, bamboo was cut, sanded and used. Now there are bamboo, glass, earthenware and silicon.

What kinds of issues does cupping help?

Cupping has a history of helping with so many conditions, it's crazy to think of everything it has been used for but here is my personal list as it is one of my favorite "tools".

-Neck, Shoulder or Back pain- when combined with acupuncture, they amplify and compliment each other.

-Hip pain and Sciatica

-Leg tightness and pain

-Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

- Arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

-All Injuries (shoulder and ankle are common)

-DETOX- Cupping is known to help clear out toxins and detox while removing stagnation and bringing healthy new cells to the surface. The more dark red or purple an area of the body becomes with the same amount of suction indicates there is more stagnation, more stuck energy there. Some areas will not change color indicating healthy muscles and skin in this area.

-High blood pressure

-Menstrual disorders and painful cramps

-Herpes Zoster

-Weight loss- Combined with acupuncture and dietary changes

-Headaches/Migraines

-Depression and Anxiety

How does Cupping work?

A alcohol soaked cotton ball is placed near the lip of the cup and quickly removed pressing it on the skin. The amount of oxygen or lack of oxygen inside the cup determines the tightness of the cup. So... the practitioner can choose how strong or weak suction they want to apply.

Side effects

Cupping marks are very common which are bruises in the location the cup was located. The marks can last anywhere from 1 day to 7, 2-5 days is the most common. Tiredness and soreness is common the same and next day. Also, they are pulling out a lot of toxins, many of which are released into the blood stream so it is essential to drink lots of water and rest for full effects.

Reflexology- Auravedic Foot Massage

There are several theories as to how reflexology works to reduce pain and how it can target different areas of the body, including specific organs. They all confirm that reducing stress has a large cognitive effect on the brain and simultaneously releases tension.

It's said Reflexology originated in ancient Egyptian times but was adopted in Asia and  India finally making it to the west. Long ago, it was tradition when a visitor arrived in an Indian home, it was customary to draw a foot bath and massage their feet using Reflexology techniques. Stimulating the different points on the feet not only relax organs but move blood and Qi (the body's life force energy explained in more detail under the 'Breath and Movement' page on this website). Much of the tension and pain found in the body is due to stagnation (sluggish movement) of blood and Qi. When there is lack of flow, it can create excess or deficiencies in the bodies organs. Reflexology points on the hands and feet correspond in a mirror effect to different organs and body parts. It works as a complimentary whole body medicine treating not only the symptoms but the root cause by stimulating the correct areas.

Auriculo Acupuncture (Ear acupuncture)

Using this same microsystem described in Auriculotherapy, ear acupuncture is extremely specific as the tiny fine tipped needles have the accuracy to stimulate a point that may be extremely tiny. All the same, do not be fooled by the size, as these points can be the strongest analgesics (pain killer acupuncture points) of the entire body. They are commonly used to treat injuries, pain, addictions, PTSD (specifically with Vet's suffering from trauma), anxiety, depression, smoking cessions, headaches and can treat any condition or organ of the body. One of my favorite areas with such a strong influence!
